I adore face masks, so when I saw the rubber mask trend from Dr. Jart+, I had to try it. More importantly, I wondered if it was worth the hefty $12 price tag for one use. Since I’d tried Sephora brand masks in the past and found that they were incredible, I also wanted to know if the rubber masks were any better.

The masks we opted to try were Dr. Jart+ Bright Lover Rubber Mask and Dr. Jart+ Hydration Lover Rubber Mask. For a comparison, we tested them against Sephora’s Pearl Face Mask and Lotus Face Mask. These are our results!

Dr. Jart+ Bright Lover Rubber Mask vs. Sephora Pearl Face Mask

I loved this thing. As a newbie face-masker, taking this out of the package was a bit intimidating. Then I was a little confused because I wasn’t sure how long to keep the ampule pack on. Once the Dr. Jart+ Bright Lover Rubber Mask was on my face, it felt wonderful. Due to the heaviness of it, I felt like I was in serious business. Warning: it feels cooling and magical, but you do look super creepy in it — my roommate even called me into her room just to take video of me for her Snap story.

After rinsing off, my skin felt amazing; it was soft, hydrated, and smooth. The next morning my skin still felt fantastic. It even lightened some spots that were lingering from a mini breakout I had the previous week. In my limited face mask experience, this mask has definitely been my favorite.

Sephora Pearl Face Mask

When you take the Sephora Pearl Face Mask out of the package, be sure to have a paper towel on hand, it’s messy. You mostly need to know this because you will be distracted by how lovely it smells. Once you fight through the mess to smooth it onto your face, the scent makes you feel as if you are engulfed in a blossoming rose. My skin didn’t feel or look that different from the use, but the experience is relaxing. It’s the exact type of thing I picture when I imagine sitting at home treating myself to a face mask.

I’m always looking for something that will help hydrate my skin and if that came in the form of a $12 weekly mask, so be it. The feeling of the Dr. Jart+ Hydration Lover Rubber Mask was amazing, especially since it was less sticky compared to other masks I’ve tried in the past. The smell wasn’t overwhelming and had faint hints of mint that made the cooling mask even more perfect for a hot day.

After wearing the mask, I got compliments saying that I looked refreshed, but there was only one issue: my skin was incredibly red. I don’t know what happened or why, but even my mother noticed that my face was ridiculously red. I can’t deny that my skin felt moisturized, but I hated the redness. I was just glad we had another person to try it to see if it was just me. This isn’t the first mask to irritate my skin.

As a side note, Dr. Jart+ Rubber Mask requires you to wear the product for 40 minutes, so it’s definitely something you need to schedule in your day. I’m used to masks that take 15 to 20 minutes, which are much more convenient.

Sephora Lotus Face Mask

I’ve tried the Sephora Lotus Face Mask before, and that experience was great. Needless to say, I was happy to use this product again. Like Bri, I think that this mask is pretty messy. Sephora includes a ton of the serum on the mask to make sure that you can completely coat your face. There is even extra in the package to apply on your arms, hands, or anywhere else you choose, but it isn’t in a little ampule pack like Dr. Jart+ Rubber Mask.

I found the Sephora mask much more convenient since it only needed to be on your face for 10 minutes. After pulling it off, the serum left my skin sticky, but I cannot deny that it was hydrated. The smell made it really feel like a spa experience — all I needed was some candles and I was in “treat yo self” mode.

The day after the mask, my skin was still incredibly smooth and felt refreshed with less oil on the surface. Overall, I’d definitely recommend Sephora’s face mask line.

The Verdict: Are Rubber Masks Worth It?

Well, it’s hard to determine which is best since Bri preferred the Dr. Jart+ Rubber Mask and the Sephora Lotus Face Mask was my winner. Dr. Jart is perfect for someone that knows they don’t have sensitive skin and is looking for a truly refreshing experience. On the other hand, Sephora has eight different masks that are great for hydration. In the end, I’d say that if you want a brightening effect, choose Dr. Jart+ Bright Lover Rubber Mask simply because of the results. However, if you want moisturizing, save money and select one of Sephora’s face masks.
