Beauty Box 5: First Impressions
Disclaimer: It’s been brought to our attention that Beauty Box 5’s past several boxes have had delivery issues. We have reached out to our contact at the company and will keep you updated.
If you’re tired of collecting tiny samples from subscription boxes like Ipsy and Birchbox but don’t want to pay $20+ for beauty boxes that offer more deluxe and full-size items like BoxyCharm and GlossyBox, then Beauty Box 5 might just be the perfect happy medium for you. For just $12 a month (or less, depending on the length of your subscription), BB5 offers a mix of full-size and sample/deluxe-sized beauty products for their monthly subscription box.
The Products
The theme of the February box was “Birthday Sweets,” in honor of BB5 celebrating their fourth birthday. The products included:
- Manna Kadar Beauty 3 in 1 Shadow, Highlight & Blush (in Fantasy): full-size/$19 value
- Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Shadow Primer: $10 value ($20 for full-size)
- Starlooks Custom Lip Liner (in Sultry Sangria): full-size/$16 value
- Epic Blend Premium Lip Balm (in Blueberry): full-size/$3.49 value
- Hemp Nation Kiwi-Mango Body Wash: approximately $5 value ($17 for full-size)
This was my first Beauty Box 5 shipment, and I was pretty impressed! My first thought was that I love how small the box is — I know that may be irrelevant to some people, but when you receive 5+ subscription boxes every month (like me), it sure is nice to have one that doesn’t take up too much space!
I like the wide variety of products included, and I especially like that the majority of the products are full-sized instead of samples. While I didn’t personally enjoy all of the products included in this box (the blueberry lip balm and hemp body wash both had a bit of a strange scent), I gave these items to others who liked them. Unfortunately, this is something that you will inevitably run into with non-personalized beauty boxes — but on the other hand, I think the universal box is what allows services like BB5 to pack so much value into such a low monthly price.
The Value: $53.50 Total
Compared to the average value of most of the other beauty boxes I’ve tried, this one provides a pretty good return for your money. One thing that has disappointed me about some of the more expensive boxes like BoxyCharm and GlossyBox is that the average value of each box (typically around $40) tends to be about the same — or less — than the average monthly value of much cheaper boxes like Ipsy and Birchbox. In comparison, Beauty Box 5 is looking pretty good, since this month’s value was not only about $10 higher than most beauty boxes, but it also totaled out to be almost five times the price you pay for the box.
The Verdict: Is Beauty Box 5 Worth It?
I’d say the February edition of Beauty Box 5 turned out to be a pretty good introduction to this subscription box service. I was impressed with the quality of the products included in the box (especially the amount of full-sized products), and I’ve already added most of the products into my daily makeup routine. However, my favorite aspect of this beauty subscription box has to be the price point. $12 monthly is only $2 more than sample subscriptions like Birchbox and Ipsy, and although you miss out on the personalization aspect that these services offer, you gain access to much more deluxe and full-size products for a fraction of the price of other similar beauty boxes. Beauty Box 5 has officially become a serious contender for my monthly makeup fix.
