Whether you have an outside dog or an inside dog, at some point, your pooch is going to need to be outside. This may be for taking care of business, exercise, or some other day-to-day need. When you let them out, do you have complete peace of mind knowing they’re safe and secure within your yard? There are many great pet fences on the market—this article will compare two of the most popular brands. Halo Collar vs. PetSafe: which pet fence is better?

Halo Collar

Cost

PetSafe: There are a few different options when it comes to their wireless fences, depending on the area of the perimeter and the temperament of the dog. The costs of the fences range from $249.95 for a refurbished option to $339.95 for “Stubborn Dogs.”

Halo Collar: The Halo collar is a bit more expensive, with the collar being $999 and the Halo subscription plan cost varying according to which plan you buy. Just remember, you get what you pay for!

  • Basic Plan: $4.49 a month.
  • Silver Plan: $9.99 a month.
  • Gold Plan:$29.99 a month.

Winner: PetSafe

Setup

Both systems ditch the need for manually burying wires!

PetSafe: First, set up your base unit—determine the desired pet area before setup. You’ll need to place the base unit in the middle of the perimeter. The base unit has to be near an outlet, in an indoor or weatherproof area, 2-4 feet above the ground, and three feet from metal or appliances. Next, you’ll turn on the collar and set the stimulation level. Test it out, and you’re good to go!

Halo Collar vs. PetSafe

Halo Collar: Unlike the PetSafe system, you’ll actually have to walk or map out a perimeter. You can do this either on your phone by drawing the fence in the app or by walking the perimeter with the collar. Connect the collar to the app and customize the stimulation level. There is no base unit—everything is managed through your phone by Wi-Fi!

Effectiveness

PetSafe: According to the over 12,000 Amazon reviews, PetSafe earned a healthy score of 4.3 stars out of 5. Most were impressed with the simplicity of the system and how it “just works”. The main complaint, however, was that the collars seem to have a short lifespan and use a lot of batteries. Which is not a great scenario when you have a virtual fence.

Halo Collar: Based on their reviews, Halo Collar earned 4.7 out of 5 stars and had many glowing testimonials. Most customers agree on how simple it is to use, how well it works, and the peace of mind they have after installing the system. There were a few reviews stating they wish the collar were waterproof—Halo listened, and the collars are now waterproof!

Winner: Halo Collar

Durability

PetSafe: Based on mixed reviews, it’s hard to say just how durable this collar is. Many reviews state it’s incredibly durable, with no issues experienced so far. Others say that for the money spent, one would think the collar would be made of something more durable than hard plastic. Most of the issues seem to come after about a year of use.

Halo Collar: One of the updates for the most recent version of the Halo Collar was producing a more rugged, durable collar with a Pro-case that can endure chewing, scratching, and tough terrain. Overall, you can expect solid durability. Reviewers also reported being happy with the updates.

Customization

PetSafe: The PetSafe system is customizable in two ways:

  1. Different collars for different size perimeters and “stubborn dogs”.
  2. Five adjustable levels of static correction

Halo Collar: The Halo Collar system works similarly to PetSafe, but allows you to set up 20 fences that cannot overlap. Like PetSafe, Halo also offers multiple correction levels. However, they offer 15 different levels, so much more customizable.

The Halo Collar strap comes in three sizes that fit dogs who weigh 20 pounds or more with a neck size from 11 inches to 30.5 inches

The PetSafe Collar can accommodate dogs that are eight pounds or more with a neck size of six to 28 inches

With 20 virtual fence posts at a maximum of 6.2 miles from each other, the Halo dog collar can cover a maximum of 1,200 square miles! It’s worth noting that the Halo invisible fence is more effective in bigger-sized areas; you’ll need at least a ½ acre of space for your pooch to run about.

The PetSafe Wireless Fence System creates a wireless boundary that covers up to a ½ acre

Extras

The batteries of each of these collars work very differently.

The battery of the Halo Collar keeps track of your dog’s location in real time, so it is constantly being used. Its battery life is 21 hours, so you’ll want to charge the collars at night.

PetSafe collar batteries last approximately one to three months! That’s because it only activates when your dog is near a boundary edge. It does not provide GPS data.

One of Halo Collar’s most appealing features is the fact that it was made in collaboration with Cesar Milan, world-renowned dog behavioralist. Not only did he help design it, but his training, voice commands, and tips are also all included in the system.

PetSafe’s fence system has YouTube videos to help guide you through training with a PetSafe collar.

Both Halo’s and PetSafe’s customer services are reported as being great.

Overall Winner: Halo Collar

Both systems are strong contenders when it comes to your pup’s safety and well-being. While they each have similarities, Halo is the winner when it comes to setup, effectiveness, durability, customization, and extras. We rank Halo Collar’s wireless fencing as being the better option; however, it really comes down to your specific needs.
